Anthony of Padua, The Man of Sorrows (Imago Pietatis)

1529-73
Fresco
Church of St. Roch, Draguć, Croatia

As usual in this iconographic type, Mary and John hold up the dead body of Jesus for contemplation. The two women flanking Mary and John are not identified by attributes. They could be Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph, who Mark's gospel says observed the entombment, though it is uncommon for the Magdalene to wear a veil over her head.
